Maleny

It’s a steep drive up to the scenic rim town of Maleny on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast hinterland, which when we visit is in the midst of a yarn bombing Knitfest. Town benches are draped with crochet rugs. Trees have knitted coats, woollen jellyfish hang from branches. Knitted flags hang atop fences. A herd of knitted cows welcome visitors outside the supermarket and rugs of remembrance poppies hang from the veranda of the RSL. Yes, this is an arty crafty town with a bunch of interesting shops, stylish homewares and the smell of good food hangs in the air. We buy local pineapple jam, because it reminds us of our childhood, bush marmalade and superb woodware from a local craftsman, David Linton. To top it off we finish the day with a beer at the Maleny pub.

  1. I see Warwick (Qld) has just had Jumpers & Jazz in July Festival with lots of creative yarn bombing, too. So many things on the bucket list!! I think Hamilton in Victoria may have also staged something similar.
