Ravensthorpe to Albany

There are two mangy sheep and a possessive emu at the door!

We are on the South Coast Highway and we roll on through farmlands and mallee scrub and pass dozens of road trains that are in more of a hurry than us. About 50kms out of Albany the scenery suddenly changes to eucalypt plantations then small green farms.

We check into Emu Point Big4 caravan park and find ourselves in a green and shady park just metres from the beach. Two minutes walk away is a charming cafe overlooking Emu Point and the entrance to Oyster Harbour. We try the oysters of course.

A short drive away is Middleton Beach, all white sand and flanked by Norfolk Pines. The town of Albany wraps itself around the base of the granite outcrop of Mt. Clarence and Mt. Adelaide like a blanket. The historical past of the town is visible on Stirling Terrace where a row of old hotels and fine buildings overlook King George Sound.

  1. Albany is one of our favourite towns in WA. I love the change in landscape as you drive into town from Esperance, the transition from desert brown to verdant green! It reminded us of driving into Melbourne, so green. We enjoyed a 6 week house sit at Little Grove, across the harbour from Albany township. Some really nice cafes in town, including the one you mentioned at Emu Point.
    Looking forward to more of your tales form Albany!

  4. When the weather is fine, Albany is so seriously beautiful. But when it pours rain, there is a howling gale, and one is camping in a tent……I have very mixed memories of Albany.
