It’s a long way to the top, Day 17 – Hello Noosa, my you’ve grown

Day 17 Sunday June 22nd 2014 Maroochydore It is a warm sunny morning and as we are beside the sand dune the surf pounds constantly. To my mind that’s not a bad soundtrack. We drive up to Noosa and find it difficult to find a park. There are hundreds strolling along Hastings Street. We can’t believe how much this area has changed and find it difficult to get our bearings as little is recognisable. We used to know this area so well when my parents lived here in the 1980’s now the bushland is houses and the beach shacks are … Continue reading It’s a long way to the top, Day 17 – Hello Noosa, my you’ve grown

It’s a long way to the top, Day 16 – Qld at last

Day 16 Saturday June 21st 2014 Mullumbimby to Maroochydore It is a bright clear morning and 17 degrees at 8:30am, yet on the radio they’re complaining about how cold it is. The hardware store is advertising heaters and we thought it was hot overnight. Huh! Last night we visited the Mullumbimby footy club rooms for the big Friday night, we had one drink and quickly adjourned for dinner in the van. It is a nice morning for driving past the cane fields, over the Tweed and on into Queensland. Yep it’s taken us 16 days to drive to Qld! That … Continue reading It’s a long way to the top, Day 16 – Qld at last

Camping with Macca

July 2018, Elliott Heads, Qld On our way south we meet up with Woody’s brother, Woody the Elder and his missus, the Really Good Golfer and their surprise visitors Woody the Elder’s old mates Macca and Maria. Life on the road is like that, you plan meet ups with folks and then others drop in or just like the look of you and suddenly there’s a happy herd. Anyway, camping with Macca is what I would call a rare experience and like a good steak, best not overdone. We’re sitting outside enjoying a warm and pleasant happy hour when Macca … Continue reading Camping with Macca

iPad Entertainers

Winter 2018, Somewhere in Western Queensland after too many kilometres “Oh shit, here we go again, another ‘iPad entertainer’!” we moan. To be honest, sometimes it’s just karaoke with a seriously bad singer. We sneak off to cook dinner wondering why ukuleles get such a bad rap. Footnote: Anyone who’s stayed in the outback over winter will tell you that entertainment can be a lottery. Sometimes you’ll get lucky and find a singing cattleman with golden tonsils who will elevate your evening to heaven. Then on the night that you want to enjoy the stillness of a quiet evening beside … Continue reading iPad Entertainers

Lunchtime time travelling

Winter 2018, Warwick, Qld At Warwick the sky is blue and clear but there’s a wintry chill wind, even the statues are wearing woollen scarves. Parked outside someone’s house we dash into the van and do a quick change from T shirts and shorts into warm winter clothes and go off in search of a bakery pie. (Gosh it’s handy towing your wardrobe behind you). Instead of a forgettable bakery pie, we find a snippet of 1950’s Italian Australian history. The Belle Vue cafe, pressed metal ceilings, Laminex tables and matching vinyl chairs and a pretty damned good lasagne. Oooh, … Continue reading Lunchtime time travelling

When a pub burns down

Gayndah, Qld Found near the footpath in Gayndah, this memorial would bring back so many memories for the local community. After all a large piece of a town’s history is held in the pub. The good times, the bad, the memories and the memorabilia. The footy wins and lossses. The births, the deaths and the wakes. So much beer and so many raspberry lemonades for the kiddies. Continue reading When a pub burns down

Sunday Arvo at Riverview

July 2018, Riverview near Bundaberg, Qld We explore Riverview on the Elliott River. Not far from Bundaberg and surrounded by strawberry and vegetable farms this is a charming backwater with some holiday homes and a few moored yachts. A pelican paddles lazily upriver and a group of fruit pickers fish from the wharf. Small oysters are wedged in the runnels of the concrete boat ramp. Continue reading Sunday Arvo at Riverview
