Eulo
We’re camped in Cunnamulla, in Western Queensland. We pack a picnic lunch and head out of town (70kms or thereabouts) west to Eulo. As we leave town the paddocks are just a sea of red dirt. The road is very … Continue reading Eulo
Goin’ to the Garradunga
Her doors are all open to the warm breeze in true Queensland fashion. There’s a pair of crossed cane knives etched into her doorstep. She’s been around a while and she’s seen the cane grow higher than high, year after year. This is sugar country and she’s a sugar pub. And inside it’s as dark as molasses. The publican’s missus moves easily behind the bar pulling beers and quickly shoving the glasses into stubby holders to keep them cold. She’s cooking chips for a road worker, “the bridge is out you know”. And lunch for an old geezer at the … Continue reading Goin’ to the Garradunga
Country Chic
Spotted at the Wellshot Hotel in Ilfracombe, Queensland. These cowboy boot vases are just the icing on the cake in this friendly outback pub. Continue reading Country Chic

A load of old stuff
Winter 2014 The Herberton (Qld) Historic Village has an exhausting and extensive collection of paraphernalia from the Atherton Tableland’s early days. The most fascinating is the fact that most of the buildings in the village are original and have been trucked in from all over the district. It was effort enough towing the caravan through those hills let alone a shop or a school. As we leave the museum some poor woman almost chokes as Woody says “don’t they ever have anything new in these places?” Well I knew what he meant. Continue reading A load of old stuff
Getting High on Coffee
If you’ve been following this blog for a while you’ve probably realised that we really enjoy our food and that Woody can’t survive without freshly roasted coffee. Winter 2016 We spend hours stocking up on supplies in Townsville. And searching for a coffee wholesaler, one of which has their home address listed on the website rather than the business address. We find ourselves driving up near vertical streets on the side of ritzy Castle Hill …with the van on the back. I can’t breathe for fear that we won’t be able to turn around or even go uphill if the … Continue reading Getting High on Coffee
Sunrise Port Douglas
Here’s one for ‘Bernie’ over at Diary of a Dublin Housewife a typical sunrise on Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas, Queensland. Warm and tropical and only a short stroll up the beach to good coffee, great cafes and one of my favourite pubs The Courthouse (aka The Courty). Continue reading Sunrise Port Douglas
Cooroy
Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Winter 2017 Camped at Lake MacDonald, nearby Cooroy beckons. Well maintained old timber shops, trees and gardens. There is a large grassed area for RV parking (it’s nice to know that some councils realise how difficult it … Continue reading Cooroy
Nambour
Nambour on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast is a modern version of what it was 30 odd years ago when we visited regularly. Sadly, the big old sugar mill has been replaced by a supermarket. Of course, this means that the cane train no longer rumbles across the Bruce Highway leaving a trail of sugar cane on the roadway. The tracks thankfully are still there as a reminder of days gone by. Continue reading Nambour
