Follow the Sun, Day 48 Cania Gorge

Day 48, 30/8/2019 Friday, Mulambin to Cania Gorge, warm 26 Another beautiful morning and we quickly slip back into the old pack up routine. There are farewells all round as we’re the first to leave. The others will catch us down the track shortly. It’s already 22 degrees at 9:00am and we call into Rockhampton for a few supplies. Fruit and Vegies at Doblo’s fabulous fruit barn and spelt bread at Allenstown.  We’ve been advised to avoid the New England Highway as the drought has caused Stanthorpe, Tenterfield and Tamworth to be critically low on water.  Thus we pick up … Continue reading Follow the Sun, Day 48 Cania Gorge

Mulambin Mumblings – Destocking

Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld With all of the recent talk of crackdowns on overweight caravans – Woody woke in the middle of the night and declared that the van should be destocked. “The rice cooker can go” he says “and the spare set of sheets.” This from the man who stores beer in the ‘cellar’ under the settee, in the car fridge, under the bed and in his undie drawer! At last count (or is that stocktake?) there were 70 bottles of the frothy stuff! A man’s not a camel though is he? Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Destocking

Mulambin Mumblings – To Netflix with love

Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld We drive into Rockhampton to do some shopping, lots of bits and pieces in fact, which has us darting back and forth across town following the dulcet tones of Google Maps. Booze, bread, coffee beans, craft twine*, fruit and vegies from the fruit barn and a new hairdryer as ours has burnt out. Then in a rush of excitement in the electrical store (perhaps we’ve been in the bush too long) we buy a Google Chromecast dongle thingy. Why Chromecast? Well we’re getting old and soft and watching more TV these days and have … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – To Netflix with love

Mulambin Mumblings – Pisang Ducasse

Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld Now that’s not a heading you often see. We were up early to take Double or ‘Nuthin and Shirley to the Yeppoon Farmer’s Market which turned out to be a bit of a non-event. Double or ‘Nuthin had been told to look for the pineapple juice. He found it and bought some, frozen, in an old vinegar bottle. Demand must be fierce as they don’t even have the time to soak the labels off the bottles. Anyway, he reckons it was good. Although on this overcast morning there weren’t many stalls we stocked up … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Pisang Ducasse

Mulambin Mumblings – Rush Hour

Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld I pulled my shoulder again last night just trying to take my shorts off! I know, it makes an awful mind picture and of course another damned uncomfortable night. That’ll teach me for wandering around pubs in the dark. It’s 9:00am I’m feeling like death warmed up and Woody rushes into the van with an anxious look on his face. “I need to go to the loo!” he says “Well go.” “I can’t, it’s rush hour!” It seems 12 cubicles aren’t enough at peak hour. Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Rush Hour

Mulambin Mumblings – Dave’s Cooking Classes

Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld Every night at Mulambin Dave from Gippsland pops into the camp kitchen to cook dinner on the BBQ. Tonight, he tells us he is cooking Bolognaise Sauce…on the barbie. That raises our eyebrows. As we chat Dave is chasing mince steak and onions around the hot plate with a spatula and when it’s cooked he tells us that his wife, whom he refers to as “The Racobite” so we assume that she must be a non-drinker, will add tomato puree to it. You learn something new every day in this caper.  At happy hour … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Dave’s Cooking Classes

Mulambin Mumblings – Toothless and Butterless

Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld Toothless Johnno got his nickname when he broke a tooth off his denture plate a few years back, before he could finish his lunch a bird had flown off with it. The tooth not the whole plate. It seems that poor old Toothless is stalked by birds and swooped whenever they get the chance. The cheeky little buggers know him and pass the word around. So, we’re not surprised when Toothless Johnno butters his toast, turns away to get his egg and a blue faced honeyeater swoops down and starts eating the butter off … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Toothless and Butterless
