Roadside Dunnies

We’ve spent the night in a quiet and spacious rest area called Barradale in the Pilbara. Surprisingly quiet in fact considering the amount of passing motorists and the road crew who are working on the nearby bridge. I wander over to the facilities and meet a young family who have just stopped. “We’re from Pannawonica” says one little girl “and we’re going to New Zealand. It’s so cold here and Dad got us up at four (am). Would you like to see me do cartwheels?” Her two brothers are doing double jointed tricks and their Dad explains that they’re off … Continue reading Roadside Dunnies

Warburton’s Bridge

Warburton’s Bridge is a pleasant camp ground tucked into the hills south of Castlemaine, Vic. There are well made concrete fire pits, those good ones with a hot plate that swings over the fire. There is a toilet as well. The first camp sites don’t have a view of the river as it is quite overgrown but it is only a short walk further into the camp ground for a paddle. When we stayed, there was phone reception from the hill behind the toilet. The best access on a good made road is from either Chewton or Guildford. The local … Continue reading Warburton’s Bridge

Burra Gorge

Just off South Australia’s Goyder Highway (B64) between historic Morgan on the Murray River and the heritage town of Burra is a road called the World’s End Highway (now there’s a name for you). From the highway it is a short drive through sheep paddocks to the summer dry stony creek that has carved a small gorge. There are large gnarly gums and you’ll find plenty of room to camp. On a warm early autumn evening we sat outside and celebrated our mate’s birthday, perhaps we celebrated a little too hard, but after all we were under a magic carpet … Continue reading Burra Gorge

Avoca Lions Club Park

We recently visited the gold mining town of Avoca, Vic. Avoca Lions Club has kindly provided a spacious RV park on Dundas Street which is only a block back from the main street (Sunraysia Highway) and beside the Avoca River.  There is a modern amenities building, the site is level with plenty of turning room and a sheltered BBQ area. The Avoca Hotel is charming and has had a new lease on life. We once stayed there in the 1980’s and there was what looked suspiciously like a bullet hole in our bedroom window. The ‘old girl’ certainly looks more … Continue reading Avoca Lions Club Park

Rosedale Willow park

On the grassy banks of the Latrobe River flats and just below the Princes Highway you’ll find the Rosedale RV Camp. There is a meandering walking trail into the cheery little town a kilometre away. Locals have kindly provided two portable toilets for the campers to use. There is a rustic old tin roofed fireplace to warm cool evenings that I can always remember having been here on this spot. Yes this has been a wayside stop for families for generations. The Rosedale Tavern Hotel is known for its pizza and take away can be picked up easily on your … Continue reading Rosedale Willow park

B Crossing

The residents of Seymour, Vic have done a great job in providing a free camp at historic B Crossing. Just out of town on Northwood Road and beside the Goulburn River this is the perfect spot for a first night out of Melbourne. There are plenty of grassy sites and most are level with views of the river. There is plenty of shade and of course sunny spots for the TV buffs who need satellite reception. There is a charming old wooden bridge that requires quiet contemplation. Now if only we could fish, that would make it perfect.         Continue reading B Crossing

Grantham’s Bend

Just out of Wahgunyah and across the Murray River from Corowa is a free camp called Grantham’s Bend. It is on a broad bend of the river and there is plenty of safe camping space. There are no facilities so you will have to bring your own (toilet, shower, water and power). By safe I mean without overhanging branches. For those that aren’t familiar with this area the grand old river Red Gums like the one in the photo are prone to drop enormous limbs with no warning at all. It is not uncommon to hear a mighty crack and … Continue reading Grantham’s Bend
