Thoona according to the publican is the town that is in the middle of nowhere but close to everywhere and indeed it is, as it is about 30kms from either Benalla or Wangaratta in Victoria. The Thoona pub commands a view of the town of 70 or so people, a general store that opens most mornings and the imposing Mt Meg across the paddocks. High up amongst the granite boulders in the Kooyoora State Park you’ll find a large campground with more than enough room to pitch a tent or park your van. The road in is excellent and sites are reasonably level, nothing a couple of ramps can’t fix.
