Thoona according to the publican is the town that is in the middle of nowhere but close to everywhere and indeed it is, as it is about 30kms from either Benalla or Wangaratta in Victoria. The Thoona pub commands a view of the town of 70 or so people, a general store that opens most mornings and the imposing Mt Meg across the paddocks. Prunus trees are pink with spring blossom, canola fields are golden and a genial publican keeps the fire burning in the bar. The old girl was rebuilt after a fire in 1894 and has suffered a few dodgy renovations over the years but it is a homely place with plenty of room for RV overnighting out back.
In March the town of Thoona hosts the Thoona Wheelie Bin Championships. Go on, go out of your way to visit this pub because “The thoona you get here, the thoona the better”.
