Dec 2019, Yackandandah, Vic There’s nothing more evocative than an old fence post. I’m sure an expert in these matters would be able to date this one. To me, well it takes me back to my childhood. A time when a new fence was built. Me a goofy little country kid in gumboots watching my Dad and our neighbour Ted planting the star pickets and straining the wires. Continue reading Gatepost
Dec 2019, Beechworth, Vic Beechworth is such an interesting town that I’m quite sure that a lot of tourists aren’t aware of the gorge. By the time you’ve immersed yourself in gold rush history, walked the shops, had your fill of stylish clothes and homewares and refreshed yourself at an historic pub or two then any mention of gorge would have you dashing off for a long lunch somewhere nice. But no, there is a gorge and surprisingly it’s just behind town. “In Beechworth, we take the drive along the Gorge Road, a narrow twisting one-way road that clings to … Continue reading Beechworth Gorge
Dec 2019, Yackandandah, Vic As we wandered about Yackandandah, we were curious as to why there were yellow yaks on houses. These yaks denote households working toward the community goal of total renewable energy. TRY or Totally Renewable Yackandandah was … Continue reading TRY
Here’s one for the readers who are fascinated by Aussie place names. When I took this photo just prior to Christmas, Tangambalanga, Vic was bathed in light smoke from the Sydney bushfires. I was going to use the photo for an entirely different story based around some folks we met last year. Now this pretty dairying centre on the Kiewa River close to Tallangatta has its own fire concerns with fronts on both the south and the east of town. For overseas readers who wish to get an understanding of the extent of these bushfires, the maps on these Victorian … Continue reading Tangambalanga
Dec 2019, Yackandandah, Vic The cicadas here are extremely loud, I can somehow block them out and relish in the ‘sound of summer’ which reminds me of our last house. Woody, on the other hand is going nuts as the … Continue reading Red eyes and sore ears
Dec 2019, Yackandandah, Vic On a hot afternoon we take a drive around town and out to Yackandandah Waterhole at Allan’s Flat. This quarry like swimming hole was formed by gold dredging in days gone by. The swimming hole is … Continue reading Yackandandah Waterhole
Dec 2019, Yackandandah, Vic The town is quiet, no tourists, blissfully quiet. The park lady checks us in and her husband guides Woody perfectly around a large tree and into our site. I thank him for doing my job and … Continue reading Yackandandah Caravan Park
Dec 2019, Yackandandah, Vic You’d have to be pretty cheesed off wouldn’t you? If you’d just spent a year or so building this fine bridge, another obstacle overcome in the 1000 or so kilometre road between Melbourne and Sydney, when someone higher up the pecking order decides to change the route to Chiltern. Chiltern for heaven’s sake! I wonder if a few pockets were greased in the process? The stone bridge was built in 1859 and 1860 when this was the Melbourne to Sydney road passing through the gold towns of Beechworth and Yackandandah. Upon completion it was decided that … Continue reading Yack Stone Bridge
1/1/2020 Readers, you know that I try to keep this blog light and bright and normally at this time I’d be shouting “Happy New Year!” from the rooftops but I find it hard to be positive. As you’ve probably read in your newspapers and newsfeeds and witnessed on your televisions and I direct this to overseas readers, this country is burning, uncontrollably. We watch the news broadcasts with tears in our eyes as towns that we’ve visited and had happy memories of are obliterated. Many of the towns, and that isn’t an exaggeration, many that we visited in 2019 have … Continue reading A happy new year it’s not
