Go West, Day 112 – Ballarat

Day 112 Friday 26th June 2015, grey 9 oh no, now it’s 8 – 13 Tailem Bend to Ballarat This is ridiculous we’re on the road at 7:30! I guess that’ll make up for the half hour that we’ll lose at the border. Last night we nodded off to the honking of water hens which certainly worked for me anyway. We cross the border into Victoria. Sheep, shearing sheds, grain silos and gnarly old red gums. Feels like home. Eek HOME = Ironing and I haven’t done that since Perth.  The town of Kaniva has painted sheep statues on the street … Continue reading Go West, Day 112 – Ballarat

Go West, Day 111 – Tailem Bend

Day 111 Thursday 25th June 2015, 14 degrees, overcast, feels like: winter Port Augusta to Tailem Bend The Port Augusta Big 4 certainly was an improvement on the Shoreline Top Tourist where we stayed on our way west. We would stay here again. Under the Port Augusta Bridge if you look carefully on the southern bank on the inland side, there are the ribs of an old boat sunk into the mud. Go West, Day 105 – Katherine

Day 105 Friday 19th June 2015, 28 degrees in the van Santa never made it into Darwin either. Katherine After I clattered through the van on one foot in the middle of the night hopping from settee to stove to bathroom and back, we decided that it would be best to head for home tomorrow. Darwin can wait for another day. We wake to dozens and dozens of FaceBook messages including the news that our caravan club mates have bombarded the Nitmiluk FaceBook page and demanded our refund and the Nitmiluk Gorge guys finally heeded their requests. It shows the … Continue reading Go West, Day 105 – Katherine

Go West, Day 101 – Katherine

Day 101 Monday 15th June 2015, 32 and warm Victoria River to Katherine Ah the smell of hay is wafting into the van. The sun turns the escarpments bright red. Kangaroos graze quietly, there are four blue winged kookaburras in the gum tree above. You know the ones that don’t laugh properly and all that comes out is a strange strangled sound. High up on the rock ledges are tall Livingstonia palms. Lorikeets and corellas go bonkers in the gum trees. This is beautiful country, coloured grasses (I’ve gained an appreciation for grasses on this trip) and perky, ooh bugger we’ve … Continue reading Go West, Day 101 – Katherine
