Gang Gang Cockatoos

Feb 2019, Skipworth Reserve, Jamieson, Vic It’s always exciting to see an unusual bird and even better to get a chance to photograph them. I find Black Cockatoos elusive and always flying too high. Last year I had my first glimpse of a pair of Major Mitchell Cockatoos near Bourke, but it was only fleeting. These cheeky guys however visited us on two nights to feast on what looked like a Hawthorn bush. They were near enough to distinguish their dark grey plumage and distinctive red heads but not close enough for a clear image. Continue reading Gang Gang Cockatoos

A bevi @ the Kevi

One of our favourite watering holes is the historic Kevington Hotel (aka the Kevington Hilton) at Kevington in Victoria’s high country. Situated on a bend of the winding road that follows the wild Goulburn River ‘The Kevi’ is a welcome sight for the weary traveller. The front bar is a treat, adorned with gold rush photos of days gone by and once neighbouring valley hotels that have succumbed to fire. This is an area popular with deer hunters and on the wall hangs the head of a magnificent deer that wasn’t shot but the victim of a road accident not … Continue reading A bevi @ the Kevi

Stingray Bay

At Stingray Bay in Warrnambool there are two small islands, Merri Island and Middle Island. These two islands are home to Little Penguins whose numbers have been diminishing due to attacks by foxes. Since 2006 Italian Maremma Guardian Dogs have been used to protect the penguins and other birdlife. The penguin numbers are now increasing. Sound familiar? Well the movie ‘Oddball’ was based on the work of these amazing dogs. Continue reading Stingray Bay

Penshurst

In the small Western District town of Penshurst in Victoria there is an old store with this sign out front: “In 1857 young William Olle rode into the bush searching for strayed stock and became lost. William’s parents gave him up as dead. He was found collapsed on a native burial mound by an indigenous tribe. For two years William travelled with them through the bush. He came to Penshurst and recognised the sign ‘Olle’ over this building. He was reunited with his parents.” Source: … Continue reading Penshurst

Bridgewater Weir

The town of Bridgewater on Loddon is in Central Victoria, just north of Bendigo. A water race and weir was constructed on the Loddon River at Bridgewater in the late 1800’s for the flour mill. The water provided irrigation for farmers and created a swimming hole for the local community. Even today it is an inviting spot for exploring you’ll find it a short walk from the Loddon Bridge Hotel. Continue reading Bridgewater Weir
