In Lightning Ridge we take orders for fish & chips only to find out that they’re out of fish! No Saturday papers until noon, “the truck’s only just left Walgett.” Continue reading You know you’re in the bush when…

Tiny Kimba in South Australia is known for many things: It’s halfway across Australia on the Eyre Highway, it has a ‘ Big Thing’ the famous Big Galah and now its grain silos have been magnificently painted. It’s easy to … Continue reading Kimba
Leaving the Eyre Peninsula coast we follow the Flinders Highway north to pick up the Eyre Highway and turn east towards home. We beat into a South easterly wind that alternates from being on the nose to being slightly angled which gives the van a bit of a rolling feel. Woody is grumbling and complaining that he cut himself shucking an oyster and now can’t open beer bottles. Shucks. Continue reading Aw Shucks!
In Streaky Bay, El Prado and his missus Elle were doing a few chores and found themselves locked out of their van… again. This takes the tally to 3 times now (both locked in SA 2015, Elle locked in Qld 2016, both locked out SA 2018). Not a bad track record guys. Whilst ringing the RAA for assistance their neighbour comes over and with a grunt lifts the whole door up and voila it opens. The cause of the problem was a magnetic curtain strip that had caught in the door frame jamming it. The neighbour’s words of wisdom were … Continue reading Locking Up
Eyre Peninsula, March 2018 The wind is becoming stronger and everything is coated in a layer of dust. As soon as I wipe the benches they are gritty again. I give up. Cooking dinner outside has become a joke but the wind doesn’t seem to deter the flies. At least the washing dries within minutes. We spend another day in the van avoiding the heat and wind and locking down everything that rattles in the wind, roof hatches are jammed down extra tight and the door (opening into the wind) threatens to blow off its hinges every time we open … Continue reading Managing Wind
Eyre Peninsula, March 2018 Since Whyalla we’ve been lashed by strong winds and have rarely had a chance to put the awning out. Locks Well was calm until after sunset then strong winds buffeted the vans all bloody night. I had visions of our two rigs being blown off the cliffs and into the sea. Thus, we set ourselves up at Streaky Bay and venture into town for a look around. We sit in the pub and remark on how nice it is to at last have no wind. However, when we return to the park it is blowing a … Continue reading A Windy Coast
Yep, our neighbour caught three large crabs and he’s pretty happy. Continue reading Our neighbour’s got crabs!
Our bunch of Grey Nomads have three adjoining sites at Streaky Bay Islands Caravan Park in South Australia and we’re mighty thankful as a long weekend is coming up. “The Islands” park is only a year old and about 4kms north west of town. It is sensibly planned with spacious gravel sites overlooking the bay and room enough for a boat beside your car and van. As well there are 5 stunning private bathrooms contained within a lovely bathroom building complete with piped music, potted plants and pictures on the walls. There are two of these bathroom complexes in the … Continue reading Streaky Bay Islands Caravan Park
