A homonym of a race meeting
June 2018 If Gabbi Garmin acts up today we can tell her to get lost as it’s one long straight road, the Kennedy Developmental Road, from Winton to Hughenden. 214kms of yellow Mitchell grass plains, black soil, cattle and sheep. … Continue reading A homonym of a race meeting
Emergency Landing Strip
The Royal Flying Doctor Service often uses roads as a landing strip in emergencies. Like so many outback roads the Diamantina Developmental Road in Western Queensland carries markings for this purpose. Continue reading Emergency Landing Strip
When life gives you cumquats…
Anyone who has followed this blog for any length of time will realise that we rather enjoy our food. So, when our camp host Judy at Warrego Riverside Tourist Park in Cunnamulla, Qld requested that we use some of her … Continue reading When life gives you cumquats…
Cunnamulla Fellas
Arriving in Cunnamulla at noon we’re surprised to find a bright cheery oasis of gardens and greenery. We have burgers at The Gidgee Bean Cafe and after having seen very few vans this trip we marvel at the number passing the cafe window. Hello, we don’t even think to ring the van park and book ourselves a spot. We arrive shocked to get the last two sites. No, ‘sites’ is a misnomer. We’re sharing a driveway with a large off road truck thing and on a promise for a river view site tomorrow morning. In trying to shimmy into our … Continue reading Cunnamulla Fellas
Leave me alone
May 2018 An icy autumn morning and the bush smells fresh and clean. The Kidman Way has very little traffic but we’ve never seen so much wildlife. Kangaroos, emus and goats and plenty of dead ones too. Woody is up to his old tricks and flat out swatting flies on the windscreen with the back of his hand. This is a long straight stretch and a sign says ‘Welcome to Outback NSW’. Then my phone rings, it’s a crank call from Norway…oh for God’s sake, can’t we just go bush once in a while? Continue reading Leave me alone

Barringun
On the Kidman Way the Barringun (NSW) Roadhouse is almost on the Qld border and can best be described as an absolute shocker in a sea of red dirt, but perhaps I’m talking it up. We stretch our legs have … Continue reading Barringun
Bramston Beach
It’s only a short 80km drive south of Cairns, Qld and exciting to turn off into cane farms. There are rich pastures of fat cattle and their accompanying egrets. As we drive into thick rain forest signs warn us to … Continue reading Bramston Beach
Coconut
Ingenia Cairns Coconut Resort is in every way a family holiday destination with even more cabins than the 200+ van sites. It is huge and busy with kids pedalling about. If not for the help of our neighbour we could not have made it into our site. It is beautiful with palms and shrubs and trimmed lawn but on an odd angle to the curving roadway. We dread repeating the process next Monday when we have to take the van north of the city to have the fridge repaired! There’s a cafe, mini golf, water park, two pools, spa, gym … Continue reading Coconut
