Summer’s Last Hurrah

The late summer weather in Melbourne has been superb this year. Warm sunny days that just make you say “Ah”. A few Saturdays back we parked the car at the western end of the Yarra River and just strolled the south bank of the river until lunch beckoned. Over a glass of wine and a plate of tapas we marvelled at just how much our city has evolved in our own lifetimes. How an industrial river flanked by factories and wharves has emerged like a butterfly to become a bright and colourful city. The factories have been replaced with office … Continue reading Summer’s Last Hurrah

What’s the crime?

March 2015 We’re in Port Augusta, SA and now that the wind has stopped I can appreciate the view across the inlet to the Flinders Ranges. It is a shame that the view is spoilt by a high barbed wire fence. We are locked in a gated park, apparently due to the incidence of burglaries. Even the dump point has a fence around it, although I’m wondering what they could steal, poo perhaps? Continue reading What’s the crime?

The Ants Reign

Nullarbor 2015 Confused with multiple time zone changes as we cross the Nullarbor Plain we wake at 5:00am and it is broad daylight. When we open the door the flies are waiting and zoom in. Damn I’d only just managed to kill the ants that took up residence in the fridge. Yep that’s right they were inside the fridge busily doing what ants do. Now the flies want my breakfast. We haven’t seen any live animals since the emus around Port Augusta and very little road kill. I think the insects are dominating out here. Continue reading The Ants Reign

Loose Ends

It’s 2014 and we are camped in the Coopernook State Forest in NSW. We chat with our neighbour who is from nearby Port Macquarie. Our neighbour and his wife have sold their house and have several months to wait for the new one to be built. They intend to go north in their camper trailer but have a few loose ends to tie up before they hit the road. Thus here they are 70 kilometres south of home waiting. One of the loose ends is our neighbour’s dying mother in law. Continue reading Loose Ends

Different Lifestyles

We have new neighbours. The couple on our right are from NSW and have stayed here in Broome fifteen times, I think they like it. And they’ve just sold their house to go on the road permanently. On our left is a couple from South Australia. He’s a retired maintenance man and she was a house mother in a boarding school. They do short term postings at caravan parks and farms, they were even rat catchers on a pig farm. They’re on their way to take up a posting at a cattle station that is run by the Indigenous Land … Continue reading Different Lifestyles
