Firewood Collection in Victoria

With the bush fire season behind us we can think of cool evenings around the campfire once more. Of course that brings the other problem of whether to collect the wood, buy it in small packs at inflated prices or use the services of an old country wood merchant who delivers to camp grounds when phoned. There is a charming old gent who provides this service in the Upper Goulburn Valley. If you are up that way just look for his phone number on the tree at Skipworth Reserve. Remember that you will have to drive back into Jamieson to … Continue reading Firewood Collection in Victoria

Mirrored Wardrobe Doors

Don’t you just love the way caravan manufacturers put mirrors on the wardrobe doors on either side of the double (sorry ‘caravan queen’) bed? You can only ever approach them sideways, that is unless you are anorexic, so it’s hopeless to check out how you look or even put on a bit of last minute lippie. In our pop top van they were the only mirrors that we had so I used to have to comb my hair using my reflection in the glass of the microwave door. Perhaps that answers the question why so many couples choose single beds on … Continue reading Mirrored Wardrobe Doors

Outdoor TV

Our club is camped at Nug Nug in the Victorian High Country. Only those with satellite dishes can get TV reception.  Some of us are My Kitchen Rules fans and have missed out on last night’s cook off. So our mate G re runs last night’s show on the outside TV on his new Patriot caravan. It is spitting with rain so there we are sitting out in the bush under a large tree staring at a TV screen muttering “you didn’t crumb it properly”. And I always thought that outside TV’s on caravans were pretentious. I stand corrected! Continue reading Outdoor TV

Awning Cleaner

Awnings get grubby pretty quickly thanks to gum trees and birds that like to leave their calling cards. Not to mention the odd beetle that ends up pressed like a flower when the awning is rolled up. Here’s a recipe from ‘Tuareg’ that works a treat: 1 bucket of water 1 cup bleach 1 Tbs dishwashing liquid Strip off your shirt and put your back into applying mixture to the awning.* Roll the awning up, this action puts the mixture on the other side as well. Have a beer while waiting 20 minutes, then hose off. *Warning: If you are … Continue reading Awning Cleaner

Trip Nerves

I find it hard to describe the feeling of the first day, the setting out on each trip especially the big trips. Nerves, excitement, fear of having forgotten something or leaving the iron on. Then, is the fridge door snibbed? Is the towball locked on? Will we travel safely? But hey, we could be bowled over on the way to our corner shop without having had any adventure. I keep glancing in the side mirror to check that the van is really there, yep we’re on the road. Then horror upon horror, did we pack Woody’s hearing aids? Quaking at … Continue reading Trip Nerves

Laundering on the Road

Shelves or hangars? I’ve long since come to the conclusion that clothes travel better on shelves and for several reasons. It seems that often the wardrobes aren’t deep enough for hangars to fit without hanging on an angle. Wardrobes are often narrow so you may only be able to fit half a dozen hangars any way so the bulk of your clothing ends up riding around in a pile at the bottom of the wardrobe. Of course this then causes the hanging clothes to bunch up at the bottom thus destroying any advantage of hanging anyway. When hanging rails are … Continue reading Laundering on the Road

Toilet Humour

The boys cook breakfast in the camp kitchen and a long breakfast ensues. Gee we can talk and the discussion is all about toilets, heaven forbid. In the evening our mate M cooks the trout that she caught at Lake Eucumbene and once more the talk turns to toilets. People wonder why we joined a caravan club but I’ll bet they don’t know as much as we do about toilets! Thus I have it on good opinion, fuelled by a warm evening under the stars partaking of freshly caught trout and cheap wine, the best method of operating a chemical … Continue reading Toilet Humour

Awesome Apps for Aussie Travellers

Wiki Camps – if you only ever download one app then make it this one. With over 23,000 sites listed around Australia this has to be the most comprehensive camp site guide there is. There is no limit to the number of stops either, some apps force you to pay for more if you want more stops. Six stops … Continue reading Awesome Apps for Aussie Travellers

Techni Ice Fridge

Last year we bought a Techni Ice fridge after realizing that keeping the beer in the caravan fridge wasn’t ideal. Either the vegetables were perfect and the beer not cold enough or the beer perfectly chilled and the vegetables frozen. In fact on one trip some small round tomatoes morphed into rock hard red billiard balls that had to be quickly dispatched into a bolognaise sauce. There was a lot of consideration as to which way to go 12 volt or ice box and eventually the ice box won. Why? Because there is nothing better than an icy, cold beer. … Continue reading Techni Ice Fridge
