Singleton Postie Bike Bash

We stop to stretch our legs at Gilgunnia Rest Area on the Kidman Way in New South Wales and read the history boards. This was once a gold mining town of 1000 people and now it is little more than a piece of gold mining equipment and a dunny in a concrete tank. A ute with a fuel tank on the back pulls up and we wonder what he is doing. Out of the blue a little red postie bike arrives putt putting and fills up followed by another and another. It turns out that they are 30 in total … Continue reading Singleton Postie Bike Bash

It’s Winter Here You Know

It’s a mid July morning in the low twenties (Celsius) when we stop for supplies in Proserpine, Qld. Two older ladies in cardigans move aside for us in the supermarket aisle. As usual we’re wearing T shirts and shorts and one lady taps me on the arm and asks “aren’t you cold?” “No” says Woody “we’re from Melbourne.” That left them giggling. Politics

Our friend Cee regales us with tales of his recent brief foray into politics. It turns out that he took up a petition to stop the tiny, one square mile East Fremantle council from being swallowed up by the much larger City of Fremantle and won. Initially East Fremantle council had sent out a questionnaire asking residents which council they would prefer to merge with, Cee replied “Peppermint Grove” (Perth’s wealthiest suburb on the opposite side of the Swan River). Turkish mouse mats and dairying superstars

We’re on our way to Lakes Entrance, about four hours east of Melbourne to make arrangements for our Caravan Club’s Christmas Muster. Which I should mention can be quite a shebang, with four or five days of fun filled frivolity and laughter and a bit of over indulging. We pull up at Stratford as I want to buy a miniature Turkish carpet to use as a mouse mat. We stayed in this town a few years ago and I bought one of these little mats for my sister in law and have admired it ever since. I fall out the … Continue reading Turkish mouse mats and dairying superstars

Morven, Qld

As we drive we are talking about how we’re becoming overwhelmed by all of the experiences that we’ve had on this, our trip through Western Qld and as we pull up at the Augathella Road junction we see a kangaroo just standing there watching the traffic. We round the next bend into the little town of Morven and there is a crowd of people sitting in the sun having morning tea. They all wave vigorously and as we pull over a pocket rocket in yellow called Dulcie runs up to my window. It happens to be the town’s “Longest Morning … Continue reading Morven, Qld

The Friends You Make

We are on our second caravan trip and we have decided to try this free camping caper. We arrive in Charlton to find a ghost town, everything is closed and the locals have all gone off to the Charlton Show. We park in a wide area behind the shops which is signposted as the Travellers Rest. We walk the deserted main street and then set off for the free camp at Teddy Waddy, 8kms north of town. Sadly it’s right on the main road, dusty and very exposed, it’s a bit disappointing, so we return to town and find that … Continue reading The Friends You Make
