Gulargambone is a little bigger than expected, not to say that it is a big town (395 in 2011) and the caravan park is well away from the Castlereagh highway. Gulargambone has a lot of older empty shops and a … Continue reading 2828 Cafe

Pretty as a picture the Apollonian Hotel at Boreen Point near Noosa Heads on Queensland’s sunny Sunshine Coast just begs you to stop in for an icy cold beer. Boreen Point is a relaxed fishing spot on the shores of … Continue reading Boreen Point & the Apollonian Hotel
What sort of life is this when a poor old bugger can’t even lie in bed? The bloody kookaburras set up a racket of laughter at 6:00am. Then the damned black cockies start their shrieking and the whip birds, well I only wish that I could crack a whip like that. Now the sun is shining so fiercely that everyone has to sit outside for breakfast. And speaking of food, some lousy little critter ate the piece of bread that I left on the table last night. I shouldn’t complain ‘cos he saved me from having to put it in … Continue reading A Bugger of a Life
The Boab Prison Tree on the edge of Derby, WA is huge, squat, gnarled and old. Used as a lock up in the early days of European settlement it is estimated at about 1500 years of age. Boabs don’t have rings so a more accurate figure can’t be ascertained. Continue reading The Prison Tree

There is no caravan park in the Sunshine Coast hinterland town of Kenilworth, Qld, they don’t need one. The showgrounds are huge and well maintained. When we arrive Brian the caretaker is moving his van under the newly renovated house that comes with the job. Given Queenslanders passion for moving buildings hither and thither I wonder where they moved the house from? We are backed up to colourful bromeliad gardens. There are brand new toilets and showers are just a short walk away. Across the street is Jocks and Frocks laundromat. The brightly painted shops of town are busy and … Continue reading Kenilworth Showgrounds
Apologies to the vegans and the slightly squeamy but I couldn’t resist a follow up to that can of lamb’s tongues. Woody’s breakfast of tongue on toast. Continue reading Tongue Twisted
Traffic and trucks, planes and freight trains, surf pounding, rivers gurgling, waterfalls roaring, the blood curdling scream of curlews at midnight, cattle mooing, frogs croaking, bats chattering, crickets chirping, Mopokes ‘more pork more pork’ and owls hooting. Kangaroos hopping past (their tail marks in the sand next morning), wind howling, rain pelting on the roof, untimely roosters crowing far too early and the welcome screech of cockatoos at dawn on a hot summer’s morning. The sounds of the bush. Continue reading Night Noises
