Go West, Day 45 – Dongara

Day 45 Monday 20th April 2015 Nambung Station to Dongara The shower was refreshing, I reach for a nice warm towel and as I dry myself I realise that ants have nested in it overnight and now I’m being bitten from head to toe. Ouch. Nambung owner Brian rolls up in his ute and apologises for the 30 knot winds. It turns out that he had wanted to surprise us with a flight over his property in his plane. What a nice guy he is. We get away at 10:30 and already it is 25 degrees. We have lunch at … Continue reading Go West, Day 45 – Dongara

Go West, Day 42 – New Norcia

Day 42 Friday 17th April 2015 Gwelup to New Norcia In half an hour we’ve left Perth’s neat, bright, clean and orderly suburbs behind us. The road is quite narrow and busy. Large trucks whoosh past and before we know it we’ve lost another mirror. So much for the new clips especially made for Jeep mirrors. That $13 insurance policy has just cost us another $149. New Norcia, Amazing Place (rhyme it with Amazing Grace) is a Benedictine monastery ‘town’, for want of a better description. Established in 1847 by the Spanish monk Rosendo Salvado. According to its orders the community … Continue reading Go West, Day 42 – New Norcia

Go West, Day 41 – Gwelup, Perth

Day 41 Thursday 16th April 2015 Gwelup, Perth Today it’s time to do all the last minute stuff before we leave the city behind. Hang on, haven’t we been doing that for the past week? Thank goodness I haven’t had the eotrackme app turned on as it would show us that we’ve been driving around in circles too many times. I know that I’ve speed walked the length of Murray Street three times trying to beat parking meters. At least the parking is cheaper than Melbourne.  And yes we do find the Dan Murphy liquor store, was it left or … Continue reading Go West, Day 41 – Gwelup, Perth

Go West, Day 40 – Gwelup, Perth

Day 40 Wednesday 15th April 2015 Gwelup, Perth Now I’ve seen everything, I just passed a woman walking out of the amenities block wearing nothing but wet feet, a towel and clutching a bottle of shampoo. I didn’t dare say g’day for fear that she would drop the towel! Good news, our mate Veewee who had to turn back from Nullarbor roadhouse is back on the road and headed for Perth and the family. Safe travels Veewee. We wait in line at the chemist and have our flu shots, get Woody’s glasses repaired and question some poor stranger about the … Continue reading Go West, Day 40 – Gwelup, Perth

Go West, Day 39 – Gwelup, Perth

Day 39 Tuesday 14th 2015, overcast Gwelup, Perth We catch up with Woody’s older brother and his wife at their house in the southern suburbs. I take a photo of Woody and his brother and realise later that it is far too blurry……back to the instruction manual. Before we know it, it’s off again this time to South Perth to meet the Ollies and plan the next leg. The road is calling again, yes, we’re itchin’ for hitchin’ and both Shirley Temple and I have visited the hairdresser in anticipation of less populated places ahead. Continue reading Go West, Day 39 – Gwelup, Perth

Go West, Day 38 – Gwelup, Perth

Day 38 Monday 13th 2015, Sunny! Gwelup, Perth At last blue skies after a week of rain and the ants, our little fair-weather friends, are back. Woody takes the Jeep across town for a service, gets the iPhone serviced at Apple and meets his mate C for a drink. I choose housework, herding ants and learning to use the new camera before we hit the road again. Accom: $38.85 Travelling Kms: 0 Note: Upon reflection, I realise how lucky we were to have found such a peaceful city caravan park. Conveniently located between two major roads, but little traffic noise … Continue reading Go West, Day 38 – Gwelup, Perth

Go West, Day 37 – Gwelup, Perth

Day 37 Sunday 12th April 2015, showers Gwelup, Perth There’s rain on the roof again and much shouting outside. A 4WD complete with kid’s bikes on the roof drives out of the park with a very long orange electrical lead dragging behind…..I guess someone forgot to unplug their Waeco. Passing showers keep us on our toes as we stroll around Kings Park. We visit the Bali Bombing Memorial and the War Memorial. The Botanic Gardens has a new glass walkway that takes you up into the treetops and unlike most things is free of charge. We find a huge tree … Continue reading Go West, Day 37 – Gwelup, Perth

Go West, Day 36 – Gwelup, Perth

Day 36 Saturday 11th April 2015, Showers Gwelup, Perth We take a short drive into Perth and find the city surprisingly quiet. We are in the city to buy a new camera as my trusty old Nikon DSLR snapped its last down in Albany. It had been flashing up all manner of error messages since Kalgoorlie and totally disgraced itself in the Super Pit. I really can’t complain as it was 9 years old. The new one (another Nikon) will take a bit of getting used to though. We join C & C for lunch at Cicerillo’s fish market in … Continue reading Go West, Day 36 – Gwelup, Perth
