It’s a long way to the top, Day 23 – Mackay to Bowen

Day 23 Saturday June 28th 2014 Mackay to Bowen I expected that driving to FNQ one wouldn’t have to suddenly acclimatise to the sticky heat. How wrong I was. Every day we wake to very different weather. Some mornings it’s … Continue reading It’s a long way to the top, Day 23 – Mackay to Bowen

It’s a long way to the top, Day 19 – 1770

Day 19 Tuesday June 24th 2014 Maroochydore to 1770 It was warm last night and there is condensation on the windows. This morning is warm and sunny with wispy cloud. Tearfully, we say our goodbyes and hit the road yet again. The road across to the Bruce Highway is reminiscent of how all this region once looked. The valley is patch worked with cane fields and the hillsides are lush with rainforest. Towards Gympie we leave the rainforest behind for lightly treed grazing land.  At Gympie the river appears innocent but the Aldi and Woolworths stores happen to be built … Continue reading It’s a long way to the top, Day 19 – 1770

It’s a long way to the top, Day 18 – Dicky Beach

Day 18 Monday June 23rd 2014 Maroochydore  God, this is the life. We sleep like babies and our only concern is the sand on our shoes, in the car and on the van floor. This is a problem that most people would dream of! I walk along the beach as far as Alexandra headland and back. The beach is so wide and flat and the sand so firm. There are surfers out working the small waves and the morning sun glares off the windows of the high-rise buildings. We drive south. People are sitting in the sun drinking coffee at … Continue reading It’s a long way to the top, Day 18 – Dicky Beach

It’s a long way to the top, Day 17 – Hello Noosa, my you’ve grown

Day 17 Sunday June 22nd 2014 Maroochydore It is a warm sunny morning and as we are beside the sand dune the surf pounds constantly. To my mind that’s not a bad soundtrack. We drive up to Noosa and find it difficult to find a park. There are hundreds strolling along Hastings Street. We can’t believe how much this area has changed and find it difficult to get our bearings as little is recognisable. We used to know this area so well when my parents lived here in the 1980’s now the bushland is houses and the beach shacks are … Continue reading It’s a long way to the top, Day 17 – Hello Noosa, my you’ve grown

It’s a long way to the top, Day 16 – Qld at last

Day 16 Saturday June 21st 2014 Mullumbimby to Maroochydore It is a bright clear morning and 17 degrees at 8:30am, yet on the radio they’re complaining about how cold it is. The hardware store is advertising heaters and we thought it was hot overnight. Huh! Last night we visited the Mullumbimby footy club rooms for the big Friday night, we had one drink and quickly adjourned for dinner in the van. It is a nice morning for driving past the cane fields, over the Tweed and on into Queensland. Yep it’s taken us 16 days to drive to Qld! That … Continue reading It’s a long way to the top, Day 16 – Qld at last
