Locking Up

In Streaky Bay, El Prado and his missus Elle were doing a few chores and found themselves locked out of their van… again. This takes the tally to 3 times now (both locked in SA 2015, Elle locked in Qld 2016, both locked out SA 2018). Not a bad track record guys. Whilst ringing the RAA for assistance their neighbour comes over and with a grunt lifts the whole door up and voila it opens. The cause of the problem was a magnetic curtain strip that had caught in the door frame jamming it. The neighbour’s words of wisdom were … Continue reading Locking Up

Managing Wind

Eyre Peninsula, March 2018 The wind is becoming stronger and everything is coated in a layer of dust. As soon as I wipe the benches they are gritty again. I give up. Cooking dinner outside has become a joke but the wind doesn’t seem to deter the flies. At least the washing dries within minutes. We spend another day in the van avoiding the heat and wind and locking down everything that rattles in the wind, roof hatches are jammed down extra tight and the door (opening into the wind) threatens to blow off its hinges every time we open … Continue reading Managing Wind

A Windy Coast

Eyre Peninsula, March 2018 Since Whyalla we’ve been lashed by strong winds and have rarely had a chance to put the awning out. Locks Well was calm until after sunset then strong winds buffeted the vans all bloody night. I had visions of our two rigs being blown off the cliffs and into the sea. Thus, we set ourselves up at Streaky Bay and venture into town for a look around. We sit in the pub and remark on how nice it is to at last have no wind. However, when we return to the park it is blowing a … Continue reading A Windy Coast

Delicacies

If you are a regular follower of this blog you may have realised that we like our food, a lot. Whilst on the road we’re always on the lookout for local delicacies to savour. Regional produce like new seasons walnuts in Autumn from the Victorian Ovens Valley, fresh oysters from Coffin Bay and of course Woody couldn’t live without his freshly roasted coffee. We once drove thousands of kilometres for the smoked meats at Kilkivan in Qld and we weren’t disappointed. It works both ways too, as we often travel north with a freezer full of dim sims for Woody’s … Continue reading Delicacies

Getting High on Coffee

If you’ve been following this blog for a while you’ve probably realised that we really enjoy our food and that Woody can’t survive without freshly roasted coffee. Winter 2016 We spend hours stocking up on supplies in Townsville. And searching for a coffee wholesaler, one of which has their home address listed on the website rather than the business address. We find ourselves driving up near vertical streets on the side of ritzy Castle Hill …with the van on the back. I can’t breathe for fear that we won’t be able to turn around or even go uphill if the … Continue reading Getting High on Coffee

Around the World

Don’t tell Woody, but we recently chalked up 100,000kms of towing since we retired and bought our first caravan close to 6 years ago. What does that equate to? Well the earth is 40,075kms around at the equator so that makes it roughly two and half times around the earth. Woody usually does about two thirds of the driving and I do the rest and we argue quite a bit over whose turn it is to take the wheel. Our first van was a Viscount Pop Top. When we realised that we really liked this caper but wanted a bathroom … Continue reading Around the World
