Aug 2019, Yeppoon, Capricorn Coast, Qld We have been told about the Yeppoon Lagoon and we’ve driven past often without realizing it, so when Woody goes to Cooee Bay for a regular blood test he drops me at the lagoon … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings -Yeppoon Lagoon
Aug 2019, Emu Park, Capricorn Coast, Qld Emu Park farmer’s market is under the shade of the beach almond trees in a pretty park sandwiched between the caravan park and the beach. The location lends to the atmosphere. The beach almonds with their large red and green leaves, the colourful stalls and glimpses of glittering ocean. At last we find pineapple jam and Joyce the jam maker tells us that she simply cuts the pineapple, boils it, adds sugar and pectin and that’s it. Bloody lovely, we reckon. We also buy her passionfruit butter which turns out to be equally … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Emu Park Market
Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld We’ve had a relaxing time in the Yeppoon area with Woody the Elder and my sister in law, the Really Good Golfer but before they head south to the Goldie (Qld speak for Gold Coast, as opposed to Sunny for Sunshine Coast) we’re joined by old mates ‘Double or Nuthin’ Daz’ and his missus ‘Shirley’ (as in “I’m not drinking tonight, my body’s a temple”). The next day we welcome the Prado’s. That’s right, El & Elle Prado, the folks that we set off to Darwin with last June when our engine blew up! … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Meeting Mates
Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld Cooee Bay is a small crescent of beach sheltered by Wreck Point, so named for a boat that once washed up here. In 1848 having lost her crew sometime after leaving Brisbane on her … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Wreck Point
Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld One never tires of the coastal drive between Emu Park and Yeppoon. The sea is sparkling and we can see the sandy beaches on Great Keppel Island. Even though it is Sunday, Emu Park is busy and coffee shop patrons are spilling out onto the street chasing the sun. Writing this I am being watched by a curlew and two lizards. In fact, having most of the day to ourselves we sit in the sun and I spend the afternoon sketching a curlew in a variety of poses. They don’t move much during the … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Cautious Curlews
Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld We take a drive out to Byfield National Park just 41kms north of Yeppoon. The day couldn’t be more perfect. The 11km detour out to Upper Stoney campground is rough and corrugated which has … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Burgers in Byfield
Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld We wake to a glorious morning and very bright sunshine. It’s funny how moving about through many climate zones still surprises us and here it is decidedly warmer…and glaringly brighter. The painkillers gave me … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Ageing emus & breakdowns
Aug 2019, Rockhampton, Qld We drive into Rockhampton (50kms, just down the road from Mulambin) to have dinner at the Great Western Hotel. That’s the bull riding hotel and we’ve been here before. Not only is this a seriously good … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – A Load of Bull
Aug 2019, Mulambin, Capricorn Coast, Qld Which we are told by the locals is pronounced M’lumb’n. Get your chops around that one. Being back in a busier area (almost a city) I visit a doctor in Emu Park to check on my aches and pains from my unexpected examination of the bitumen on a dark night outside the 1770 pub. Which will forever more be known as my ‘pub squash’. It’s a bright modern practice with a fine painting of an emu gracing the wall. A charming young doctor (they’re all young at my age) tells me that I’ve got … Continue reading Mulambin Mumblings – Doctor, doctor
Day 25 7/8/2019 Wednesday 1770 to Mulambin, wet 17 We had a warm night and are just pulling ourselves together when the skies open…”Shit the shoes!” We hadn’t expected rain and the shoes are outside without the protection of the awning. We pack up in steady rain and of course everything gets covered in wet, dirty, grey sand. Now to answer the question, did we love it or hate it? Well, the little town of 1770 and it’s pretty cove was delightful and it was an experience to be camped right on the beach, but the camp ground has to … Continue reading Follow the Sun, Day 25 – Aah, Mulambin
