Remembering the Little Things

When you are getting on in years it’s hard to remember details. We know a bloke who’s a farmer and who’s also fond of tattoos. When a few of his cattle went missing a while back he found them on a neighbouring property. It was easy to settle the ownership dispute because their ear tag registration number just happened to be tattooed on his arm. He also has his kid’s birth dates on his leg and heaven knows what else or where. Some would call him organised. Continue reading Remembering the Little Things

Caravanning the ultimate retirement activity for males

Ladies is your husband getting under your feet? Is he bored and doesn’t know what to do with himself? Is he complaining about retirement and wishing he was back at work? Is he telling you how to hang out the washing and the best way to sweep the floor? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then it’s time to sow the caravanning seed. There is so much about caravanning that will keep your hubby happy and occupied for months on end. Firstly it involves cars, big chunky cars, with huge tow hitches and snorkels (so your … Continue reading Caravanning the ultimate retirement activity for males

Night Noises

Traffic and trucks, planes and freight trains, surf pounding, rivers gurgling, waterfalls roaring, the blood curdling scream of curlews at midnight, cattle mooing, frogs croaking, bats chattering, crickets chirping, Mopokes ‘more pork more pork’ and owls hooting. Kangaroos hopping past (their tail marks in the sand next morning), wind howling, rain pelting on the roof, untimely roosters crowing far too early and the welcome screech of cockatoos at dawn on a hot summer’s morning. The sounds of the bush. Continue reading Night Noises

A Chilling Thought

Dad’s talking thermometer now lives on our caravan and it normally only talks between 8:00am and 8:00pm. However we’ve now discovered a hidden feature….we went to Drouin and stayed in the little park called Glen Cromie not far from Mt Baw Baw. In the middle of the night we were woken to be told that the temperature had just dropped or should I say plummeted below zero, to a chilly -.2 degrees in fact. Now seriously, we’d had enough trouble getting off to sleep what with freezing cold noses and all and then we get woken up to tell us … Continue reading A Chilling Thought

Looking for long lost relatives? Sometimes they’re closer than you think.

We joined a local caravan club and discovered that we were distantly related to one of the members. We’ve travelled many thousands of kilometres with one mate from our club and this year we camped with her at beautiful Nambucca Heads. Being a relaxing holiday whenever our friend had a chance she poured over Ancestry.Com in search of her Mother’s family. Her Mother had never told her children that she had been fostered thus it had been something of a shock for them to find out only recently that the family they believed were theirs were not blood relations. Needless … Continue reading Looking for long lost relatives? Sometimes they’re closer than you think.

There’s Stacks to see in Gulgong

Most people soak up the history in Gulgong, admiring the well kept old buildings, the shop verandahs, the convict built gutter stones, the quaint picket fenced cottages. Most people soak up the history, it was the childhood home of poet Henry Lawson, it was the town featured on the first $10 note. Not us. Vee had assured us that one of the best $2 shops exists in the basement below the local supermarket. And you know what? She’s right. We spent an hour trawling the shelves in Stacks buying soaps, a new roasting fork and macrame cotton as we listened … Continue reading There’s Stacks to see in Gulgong

Fate and Mate’s Mates

By chance we are staying in a town that up until a week ago we’d never heard of. We’re camped at the Bowling Club enjoying the sun and the company of good neighbours. We join them for dinner and it turns out that they hail from West Rosebud, on the Mornington Peninsula and not far from us. The food by the way is great. We spend four days at the Kandanga Bowls Club, soaking up the sun and chatting happily with our neighbours and it takes that long for any of us to realise that one of them went to … Continue reading Fate and Mate’s Mates
