June 2017 – Ballina, NSW
I walk to the end of the Richmond River breakwater and chance upon a tsunami exercise day. The State Emergency Service, Surf Life Saving Club and Maritime Rescue are working together to make people aware of what they should do if one were to occur here. Being a low lying area of river flats, creeks and canals it is a frightening thought. Especially considering that today’s mild weather has the sea pounding the top of the breakwater. We are told that to be safe we should run either one kilometre inland or climb ten metres high, which is up to the lighthouse. I look up the hill to the lighthouse and doubt that I’d survive the climb let alone the tsunami. In true Aussie fashion the safety folks put on a sausage sizzle afterwards for the participants.
