The Top of the Town
As today is Good Friday and a religious holiday, I couldn’t resist this treasure that we found in Blackwood, Vic. Our ancestors certainly were a witty bunch. Continue reading The Top of the Town

Awnings get grubby pretty quickly thanks to gum trees and birds that like to leave their calling cards. Not to mention the odd beetle that ends up pressed like a flower when the awning is rolled up. Here’s a recipe from ‘Tuareg’ that works a treat: 1 bucket of water 1 cup bleach 1 Tbs dishwashing liquid Strip off your shirt and put your back into applying mixture to the awning.* Roll the awning up, this action puts the mixture on the other side as well. Have a beer while waiting 20 minutes, then hose off. *Warning: If you are … Continue reading Awning Cleaner
I find it hard to describe the feeling of the first day, the setting out on each trip especially the big trips. Nerves, excitement, fear of having forgotten something or leaving the iron on. Then, is the fridge door snibbed? Is the towball locked on? Will we travel safely? But hey, we could be bowled over on the way to our corner shop without having had any adventure. I keep glancing in the side mirror to check that the van is really there, yep we’re on the road. Then horror upon horror, did we pack Woody’s hearing aids? Quaking at … Continue reading Trip Nerves
The residents of Seymour, Vic have done a great job in providing a free camp at historic B Crossing. Just out of town on Northwood Road and beside the Goulburn River this is the perfect spot for a first night out of Melbourne. There are plenty of grassy sites and most are level with views of the river. There is plenty of shade and of course sunny spots for the TV buffs who need satellite reception. There is a charming old wooden bridge that requires quiet contemplation. Now if only we could fish, that would make it perfect. Continue reading B Crossing
The ground can get as hard as concrete dry weather in Australia. If you have an outdoor mat that needs pegging down and you’ve reached the end of your tether, try using roofing nails. They slide into hard ground easier than tent pegs and can be pushed flat. Continue reading Nail Care

We pack our bathers and drive 60kms north of Katherine to Edith Falls and what a pretty spot. We walk the kilometre up to the top where the climb gets a little bit difficult and we have a swim in the pool. It’s a real bucket list thing swimming in a waterfall fed pool in the Northern Territory. The walk down is much cooler in our wet togs. I am giving Woody a hard time about wearing sandals on a bush walk and as the track evens out I stop concentrating on my footing and WHACK I find myself on … Continue reading Lindsey Falls
We were based in Hervey Bay, Qld experiencing our first northern winter as grey nomads. There were two bucket list items that had to be ticked before we headed south again to freeze our extremities off. Whale Watching It is another perfectly clear day. We are picked up by the bus at 9:00am and board the Freedom 111 at the marina. Keith, Bill and Stacey are cheerful, professional and welcoming, telling us that we have the run of the boat whilst we are on board. The bay is, as it has been since we arrived here, perfectly flat. These are … Continue reading A Tale of Two Tours
Shelves or hangars? I’ve long since come to the conclusion that clothes travel better on shelves and for several reasons. It seems that often the wardrobes aren’t deep enough for hangars to fit without hanging on an angle. Wardrobes are often narrow so you may only be able to fit half a dozen hangars any way so the bulk of your clothing ends up riding around in a pile at the bottom of the wardrobe. Of course this then causes the hanging clothes to bunch up at the bottom thus destroying any advantage of hanging anyway. When hanging rails are … Continue reading Laundering on the Road
The boys cook breakfast in the camp kitchen and a long breakfast ensues. Gee we can talk and the discussion is all about toilets, heaven forbid. In the evening our mate M cooks the trout that she caught at Lake Eucumbene and once more the talk turns to toilets. People wonder why we joined a caravan club but I’ll bet they don’t know as much as we do about toilets! Thus I have it on good opinion, fuelled by a warm evening under the stars partaking of freshly caught trout and cheap wine, the best method of operating a chemical … Continue reading Toilet Humour
