According to the World Atlas the Australian Wedge Tailed Eagle is the third largest eagle in the world, after the Haast’s Eagle and the Golden Eagle. Considering that the No. 1, New Zealand’s Haast’s Eagle is extinct I’m sure we could bump the old Wedgie up to second place, don’t you think?
It is a magnificent bird with a wingspan of up to 2.3 metres and apart from glaring at us this one had his eye on lunch, a rotting kangaroo on the roadside.

I love encountering this magnificent creatures in parks where I can take my time to observe them. Of course, most that I see are feasting on roadkill, so no time to stop.

I got frighteningly close to one up in Normanton that was feasting and not worried about anything else. My pics were about as shaky as my snake pics though.
