Enjoying the tranquility of Dando’s Campground in the splendid tall timber of the Otway Ranges we light the fire for dinner. As it is building strength a ute load of locals roar in and come over to join us by the fire and say g’day. Three blokes and a young woman are all around 40 and there are a couple of kids in the back of the ute. They tell us a bit about the history of the campground and how one of them, the chap whose birthday they are celebrating was married in a clearing at the back of the campground, a beautiful spot. They are a great bunch but apart from the kids and the driver are ‘three sheets to the wind’ and having a great old time. As we chat the woman shouts to those in the ute “Shut up, you’re scaring the oldies!” I look around, then it dawns on me, oh shit that’s us.

Always a shock that. I hate being in a room full of pensioners. Then I realise I’m supposed to belong there too. Aaagh.

I got a shock when you referred to the young woman in her 40s. Beautifully composed photograph

It’s always the others that are “older”. I often greet people as “young man” or “young lady” to boost their self esteem. It’s nice to see the reactions!

Oldies! Someone’s always older haha. When my kids tell me about a person who is super old they are usually in their 40’s!! I keep reminding them I am in my 50’s!!

Lots of dodgy comments about ‘old as you feel’ but managing to resist them (so far).
