Target Practice

Nov 2018, Cavendish, Vic

The Cavendish Recreational Camping Ground is beside the Wannon River. We visited with our Caravan Club on a cold Friday morning. Yet another place for the bucket list when in this area as there are toilets and showers available in the club house, there’s a manager onsite along with power and water and a small camp kitchen. A gate and cattle grid leads down to the unpowered sites beside the river and there’s a pub just across the way but more about that later.

On the following Sunday a few of us visited the waterfalls and lakes in the area and returned to once more check the freedom camp at Cavendish. We caravanners just love checking out camp sites. We had noticed on Friday that there were some strange ‘target like’ boxes planted about the park and we wrongly assumed that they were for rifle practice. On trying to enter the unpowered section this time we were greeted by a sign warning of archery practice and a young couple who suggested that we could be shot if we entered. Thus, we wisely retreated to check out the pub just across the river. We wondered if it was actually open as it looked a little unloved but upon opening the door of the Bunyip Hotel we discovered a warm and cosy hidden gem packed with locals enjoying the regular Sunday Chef’s Platter Lunch and local wines. A few beers and bowl of hot crunchy chips is a better way to spend an afternoon than being shot at!
