Day 62 Wednesday Aug 6th 2014 Mt Isa
It is warm and wet. We drive past Buchanan Park, the rodeo ground. It is already a quarter full of rodeo people, horses and ponies. This year will be the 56th Mt Isa Rodeo and it is expected to bring 10,000 people to town. Not bad for a town of 22,000.

2021 Note: Mt Isa was accredited in the Guiness book of Records as being the largest city in the world because of its area of 40,977 sq km. And that ‘suburb’ of Camooweal? Well the 189km road between Mt Isa and Camooweal is the longest ‘city’ road in the world.
The Mt Isa rodeo is the largest and richest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere.
Gosh our timing is lousy. We had to leave Mt Isa as it was booked out for the rodeo. After wandering about this country for years we still haven’t made it to a rodeo though we have fluked several campdrafts and how exciting they were.
The windscreen was eventually replaced when we got home, but it took two tries as the first one that was installed wasnt rain sensing.
Bad luck

Shame youve never seen a rodeo yet with all of your travelling. Actually didn’t know it was an Aussie thing at all. Thought rodeos were North American only.

It’s a huge tradition around the country and I’m quite sure that in Qld and the NT they ride before they can walk. Even now you can still see drovers on horseback moving cattle about the bush.

The dam at Lake Moondarra is well worth a trip out to.
