It’s a long way to the top, Day 72 – Qantas Founders Museum

Day 72 Saturday Aug 16th 2014 Longreach

The rain has stopped leaving the park a sea of puddles. We visit the Qantas Founders Museum and spend five hours. ‘The Spirit of Australia’ could not be a more apt slogan to describe Qantas. Once again, a most unlikely business created by people who were game to give it a go. The airline was initially started to link the towns of Charleville, Longreach, Winton and Cloncurry. Each of these towns were linked to the coast by a railway but not to each other and the unmade roads were impassable in the wet season. We got to sit in seriously old planes and crawled all over a 747. We even had a go on a flight simulator but unlike the rest of us Double or Nuthin’ could actually fly the thing. I guess it’s in his genes.

2021 Note: In his genes? His Dad was an Australian Spitfire pilot who flew in the Battle of Normandy in World War Two.
