Day 35 Monday 12/6/2023 Murwillumbah, NSW to Toogoolawah, Qld, Cloudy, damp 21
It’s the King’s Birthday holiday in NSW but not in QLD. Access to the dump point at Murwillumbah was closed during the crystal, craft & jewellery festival and our loos need emptying every 3 days or so. If only the clairvoyant had given us forewarning. We leave the cane fields behind and pick up the M1 across the border and into QLD where the King is not having a birthday, sorry Charlie. Being such a high-population region and straddling a state border, it must have been a nightmare here during Covid when the Queensland border was closed.
A car transport passes us with a brand-new Lotus sports car on the back. Woody wants to know what the towing capacity of a Lotus is, it might be fast but I doubt it could even tow a trailer to the rubbish tip. It’s a fast trip up the M1, M6 & M2 to the Ipswich outskirts before we take the Brisbane Valley Highway north. There’s misty rain, but we’ve avoided Brisbane and it’s good to be back in the countryside again.
We cross the wall of the Wivenhoe dam and pull into Fernvale to empty those damned toilets. ”Nothing like a catch-up at the dump point,” says Elle.

The Toogoolawah RV Stop has been remodelled and a turning bowl has been added, which is an improvement but it is a funny sight watching people trying to figure out where and how to park. No longer a rectangle I think it has done a few heads in. Once set up, we walk the Main Street and I’m the lucky one who gets to chat with a lot of people as I’m minding the dog and little Nic is always a conversation starter.

We spend a drizzly arvo watching footy, walking and sketching the old corner store. Toogoolawah has a population of a little over 1200 and is a popular spot on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, which at 160kms is the longest rail trail in the country and runs from Yarraman to Ipswich.
We have happy hour in Elle’s van and watch the last of the footy.
Dinner is chicken and mushroom pies from home with mashed potato, peas, broccoli, and champignons.

A holiday for the King’s birthday in NSW? Here in England, we didn’t even KNOW it was the Kings birthday, let alone have a day off.

Oh no, his real birthday is November, but we always have a Monarch’s birthday holiday. For us in Victoria it’s in June and no doubt one of Charles’ ancestors would have had a birthday on that day. Royal birthdays, aside it’s a great kick off for the winter ski season.

Well. I’m impressed you know when his birthday is! None of us knew.
