Yackety Yack, Day 90 – Mulambin to Theodore

Day 90 Sunday 6/8/2023 Mulambin to Theodore, clear 24, no wind! Ya gotta love the inland.

Woah! This early start is a surprise. At last, we beat Elle to be ready, she’s gone rusty. We say goodbye to the remainder of our crew and make a beeline for the Aldi at Rockhampton.

Taking the Capricorn Highway west to Westwood it’s already warmer, drier and there’s barely a breeze. We change drivers at the rest stop at the top of the Leichhardt Highway and take a quick pit stop at Banana.

As we near Theodore, dry scrubby country turns to duboisia and irrigated green crops. The high flat hill that is the Moura mine looms large to our west.

We pull into Theodore Showgrounds and find 2 sites on the fence line. It feels like home. We’ve been here twice before and Elle many times. It is a good stopover when on a long drive, and they have lovely toilet paper.

As we sit around having a quieter and more reflective Happy Hour, Elle tells us that she sleeps with a wooden spoon. We’re somewhat baffled and wonder how on earth she’d be able to defend herself against intruders with a wooden spoon. It turns out to be much more innocent than that. She has bionic knees and can no longer kneel. She’s worked out that a wooden spoon is just the thing to open the blind on the roof hatch above her bed.

No more, are there soft mauve sunsets for us now that we’ve left the coast. Tonight, we have an orange inland sunset as Woody cooks a Thai prawn curry and Elle supplies a sparkling Shiraz. Aah, we’re back on the road.
