Gippsland Bound – Heyfield Wetlands

Day 3 Tuesday 17/10/2023 Maffra to Heyfield, sunny 7 – 18

With such a short distance to travel and currently having power, Toothless’ Missus puts on a load of washing before we leave, to be hung out when we get to Heyfield.

There are only 3 other campers at the Heyfield RV Stop and they’re the ones who were braving it out yesterday.  Just after we get ourselves set up a council man comes in and mows the old oval. The place is looking a picture, what a shame I didn’t take one.

We all wander off for wetland walks in the spring sunshine. The Wetlands are part of the Gippsland Rail Trail and this time I find the lookout and some different tracks to walk. The birdlife here is abundant and I spot yellow-rumped thornbills hopping about in the grass, they’re tiny and make sparrows look like gym junkies, and a black-faced cuckoo shrike in the trees. The waterways are brimming and the frogs are ecstatic, there are clouds of insects and busy coots, water hens, wood ducks, and a chestnut teal. I sit on a bench to absorb it all, frogs croak in the leaf litter behind me, and a male superb fairy-wren and his harem flit back and forth.

Back at camp, our bunch start arriving and by Happy Hour we have 11 in all sitting in the sun on the oval.

Dinner is a tray bake of chicken wings, broccoli, asparagus with white wine, and Dijon mustard.

TV hasn’t improved with just one channel.

Accom: $10.00

Towing Kms: 22Kms (another big day eh?)
