The ‘Charles Edward 1864’ sculpture by Doug Hadaway is situated on the Lake King shore at Metung, Vic. 1200 hours went into creating this artwork.
The original Charles Edward was an iron hulled paddle steamer and she was built in Dumbarton Scotland in 1864 for the Gippsland Steam Navigation Company. She was the first regular steam ship to ferry passengers between Melbourne and the Gippsland Lakes.

Footnote: What’s the black object in the water? A mooring perhaps? No, it’s just an upended swan. Swans love feeding in this corner of the lake.

It captures the essence of small ships plying the waters doesn’t it.

Great sculpture in a beautiful location. Such a good idea to keep the memory of the ship alive.
