It’s a long way to the top, Day 10 – Urunga

Day 10 Sunday June 15th 2014 Coopernook to Urunga

It is a glorious morning and everything looks bright and washed clean. We visit Wauchope because it is there. An old forestry town it has beds of flowering gardenias lining the streets. How good is that? The smell of bacon and eggs wafts across the park from the busy cafe, mmm nice town.

We arrive at the Urunga Heads Holiday Park in time for lunch. The neat and spacious park is right on the river. Our van overlooks the spot where the Kalang River joins the Bellinger River to flow out to sea. There is a long boardwalk running all the way out to the surf beach. It has had many incarnations and was originally built for the pilot station staff to run out to the river mouth to guide the ships in. Sailing ships used to land here to transport the cedar out.

After walking the boardwalk we’ve worked up a thirst so we head to the grand old dame the Ocean View Hotel which is just across the way from our van. That’s correct we’re parked between the river and the pub, what a spot. In fact we book three nights!
