Explore Portland – Day 14 Time to go

Day 14 Monday 26/12/2022 Portland to Melbourne

Portland is yet another town that is hard to leave. It’s now time to let the families enjoy a holiday. As we pack up a neighbour who has done little other than give a cursory wave, wanders over and says “You leaving are you?” Why is it that some people only talk when you are going?

We take the road through Woolsthorpe bypassing Warrnambool and Port Fairy. This is sheep and tree plantation country. Being something of a back road it has fits and starts where it narrows to one lane but otherwise is a good shortcut. Interestingly we pass through the hamlets of Hesse, Cressy and Bessie Belle.

We have a pit stop at Inverleigh hoping for another coffee but sadly everything is closed for the holiday.

  1. In the days when I smoked a pipe and we had a smoking carriage, as I was leaving the train at my station another passenger gave me verbal abuse for having smoked. I replied that he had only to ask me to stop and I would have done. He didn’t have to wait until I was leaving.
