Yackety Yack, Day 8 – The Dunnies of Grenfell

Day 8 Tuesday 16/5/2023 Weethalle to Grenfell, sunny 19

It’s a beautiful morning, clear and chilly and the old timber buildings glow in the sunrise. This weather really is quite unusual for this time of year. I trip the power board with the hairdryer. I should have known better, most can’t handle the coffee machine, heater, and hairdryer.

As we top up the water tanks we meet a chap who lives not far from us. He meets his Sydneysider brother every winter and they tour the state. His brother says little more than “Friggin’ oath” to every comment.

We fuel up at West Wyalong and pick up the Newell Highway. It has been resurfaced since last year’s floods. Part way to Forbes we turn east on Back Creek Road. This is sheep country, the variety of trees has changed and there are mountains ahead.

There are about a dozen caravans at Grenfell Railway RV Camp. We get a nice sunny spot and spend the afternoon walking the town. The population here is around 3500. The pretty Main Street is undergoing a facelift. Sadly, the trees and flowers have gone but no doubt Grenfell will soon be returned to its former glory.

We’re fascinated by the number of backyard dunnies on historic George Street and wonder if they too are heritage listed. There are brick ones and tin ones, and dunnies of all sorts.

VeeWee texts her friend Vee who she knows is travelling north. What a surprise to find her parked 20 metres from us. We join her for happy hour and are inspired by this bright and sprightly 83year old with an ever-curious mind.

Dinner is pesto gnocchi.

  1. I had to ask the Google what a funny was, found out it has several meanings, and narrowed it down to what we would call an outhouse. An outdoor toilet. Is that right or did I miss it?

      1. Thunder box‽‽‽ That’s a great name! I laughed out loud and my wife asked what I was laughing at and then she laughed out loud. Never heard that one before.
