Yackety Yack, Day 48 – Toogoom Too Good

Day 48 Sunday 25/6/2023 Howard sunny 15 – 28

We wake to a fog, which always looks mysterious amongst the gums. Because of the burn-offs of the last few days the fog is trapping the smoke like a blanket, but the mist has highlighted the spider’s webs.

After lunch, we take off on a Sunday drive. The Burrum Heads road leads us to this fishermen’s haven at the mouth of the Burrum and naturally, we check out the caravan parks, while Elle tries to remember which one they once stayed in. From there it’s south to the next coastal village Toogoom at the mouth of Beelbi Creek. We’re instantly captivated by this holiday spot with its tropical gardens and homes that have absolute beach frontages. The Serenity caravan park is small but neat, tidy, and blissfully quiet compared to where we’re staying. What a shame it too has no TV reception. Goody’s on the beach cafe beckons and we take a table by the pier and order drinks. It’s one of those places that must be savoured. Wondering where the town shops are we turn south again and barely a few blocks away we find ourselves back in the Hervey Bay suburbs. What a disappointment it wasn’t an unspoiled paradise after all.

One of the offerings of this camp is free firewood which is popular with the blokes. As the owner is clearing the scrub behind us we get that sneaking feeling that we’re just doing him a favour.

We return to camp, Woody lights a fire and we cook steaks, sausages, and veggies on the hot plate over the flames. A mopoke calls. By God, that was a delicious dinner.

Accom: $32.00
