Daylesford Muster – Jubilation

Day 3 Tuesday 12/9/2023 Fryerstown to Daylesford, sunny 4 – 18

With only a short distance to travel today and not being able to check into the caravan park before 10:00am anyway, we have breakfast in the sun on the school veranda. A local woman and her small child drop in and the little guy is fascinated with our caravans. I’m in our bathroom, false teeth in hand and brushing furiously when I realise that Woody is conducting a tour of our van! At least the bed is made.

We tootle off down to Daylesford and the Jubilee Lake Caravan Park which is about 2½kms out the other side of town. It overlooks a crescent-shaped man-made lake and is home to 40 peacocks! (I don’t think the WikiCamps app has an icon for ‘peacocks’).

The camp is busy with our mob arriving and chatting, and selfie stalking the peacocks. This time we’re set up quickly and drive back into town for a few surprise groceries. I call them ‘surprise’ because we are floored by the prices in this ‘Weekend Retreat’ town.

Jubilee Lake, Daylesford

I take a short walk around the western end of Jubilee Lake. The tracks are muddy and haven’t dried out yet from the rain. But I do find a wooden footbridge that spans a gushing spillway, Wombat Falls (phew, that conjures up some mind pictures for you Patricia @ The Unfurling Artist). There are some lovely views across the lake.

There are expansive lawns here with a grand, log-encircled firepit which is just right for a bunch of old peacock watchers like us.

Dinner is sausages and mash and as I cook, I can hear those bloody birds calling “Hellp, Hellp” from the trees. No sooner do they settle when an old brushy-tailed possum starts growling above. Ah, the serenity.

Accom: $32.50

Towing Kms: 40Kms

Daylesford, is close enough to Melbourne for luxury spa weekends or pitching a tent.
