Day 3 Sunday 26/11/2023 Heathcote, cool 14 – 22˚
Woody endeavours to walk the rail trail but gives up because there are too many kangaroos bouncing out of the scrub. Toothless and his Missus spend the morning untangling Xmas lights. As if he can’t get enough of lights Toothless then installs a kitchen light for VeeWee that she bought last winter on the Yackandandah trip.
It’s not exactly a quiet morning as early bird club members roll in including Elle in ‘Betty’ the motorhome. Then it’s Woody’s brother Woody the Elder in his son’s campervan. Amidst the flurry I quietly lean on a lamppost and sketch the house across the road.
For a change of pace, a bunch of us drive out to Wren Estate for a wine tasting. Heathcote is the hub of a wine-growing area. Blessed with ‘red Cambrian soil’ Heathcote is famous for its particularly smooth and easy drinking shiraz. We’re greeted with a large American-style corrugated iron barn, the cellar door, set amongst vines and olive groves. As we walk inside, we are surprised to find this cavernous space quirkily decorated with antique furniture and Middle Eastern floor rugs. It’s rather delightful. Seated at a large dining table we are offered a tasting flight of 6 wines for $10 the cost of which is negated on the purchase of a bottle. Naturally, we all buy several bottles. The rose is interesting and the shiraz is sublime, smooth, fruity, and moreish. Need I say more.

Back at camp happy hour is in the camp kitchen and we get together for a communal dinner under the ‘Toothless’ awning. Supermarket BBQ chook and air fryer roast vegies. A mob of kangaroos sneak out of the scrub to graze on the lawn, several have large joeys on board. The neighbours, remember, those ones on the lunatic soup, they’re still drinking between visits to the loo. Gee, our Xmas lights look good.
Accom: $34.00

I never imagined you Happy Campers would even have Christmas Lights. You have EVERYthing!

By the time we left, a gleeful tour bus group had filled that long table and were tucking into platters of food.
