The Briars, the Balcombe’s & Bonaparte

Feb 2024, Mt Martha, Vic

On Balcombe Creek (Tichin-Gorourke as known by the Bunurong people) in Mt Martha, the property was settled in 1840 by Captain James Reid, the first house built was a thatched slab dwelling.

The property came into the possession of the Balcombe family, Alexander, Emma, and their baby daughter. A substantial house was built and expanded over time. The Briars would remain in the family for five generations.

Eight hectares of The Briars was given to the National Trust and the Shire of Mornington in 1976. The Shire then purchased the remainder of the land, 225 hectares 2 years later.

Alexander Balcombe was born on the island of St Helena and his family provided a cottage for Napoleon Bonaparte during his exile there. The granddaughter of Alexander Balcombe, Dame Mabel Balcombe Brookes (a legend in her own right) built up a collection of Napoleon memorabilia some of which can be viewed when the homestead is open to the public.

The Briars property is used for functions and events. There is a substantial wildlife sanctuary with walking trails and bird hides. It is also a delightful place to amble and enjoy the views.
