Renmark Round Trip – Mundulla to Dimboola

Day 11 Monday 13/5/2024 Mundulla to Dimboola, fog then 18

We have a late start but it’s only about 10kms back to the highway at Bordertown. Woody complains when we lose another half hour at the state border time zone change. The GPS is butting in again and wants to leave the highway and do a figure 8 loop about the countryside. Oh, spare us, AI has to be an improvement on this. I’ve now named her Nora as in ignore ‘er.

At Nhill we check out the RV camp out at the airport. It is a nice spot and quiet but more than a walk to town. During the war it was a pilot training base and some of the old buildings still remain.

We choose to stay just off the highway at Dimboola. The Caravan Park is beside the Wimmera River and what a gem this place is. It’s a nice grassy park and only a short block from town. We quickly decide that 2 nights would be a better option.

Dwarfed by Horsham just down the highway there are many historic buildings dotted around town and the shops that are no longer occupied have been turned into art and history displays. Amongst these is the shop used as a studio by artist Sidney Nolan when he was stationed in Dimboola during World War Two. This was the inspiration for his ‘Wimmera’ series of paintings. When the Dimboola Hotel burnt down the land was transformed into the rather whimsical Tower (the old pub had a tower) Park with gardens and pub remnants, but more about that next time. There are lots of walks around town and plenty of storyboards to make things interesting.

Back at camp we have a very spacious site with oodles of room around us. Dinner is a tough piece of steak (where on earth, did we buy that from?) sausages, eggs, and tomatoes.

Accom: $37.00, Fuel: $89.78, Towing Kms 131kms

    1. Yes, it makes a lot of sense. We see it time and again, a nearby town will grow to city size with all the amenities and suck the commerce from the surrounding district. Filling these empty shops with displays or using them for housing makes sense.
