Day 43 Saturday 26/7/2025 Nambucca Heads, 13 – 17, cold & wet
The rain starts at 9:00 and finishes at 2:00. The three of us have morning tea and lunch in our van, at least it is warm and cozy inside.
Midafternoon Woody’s brother Woody the Elder and our sister-in-law The Very Good Golfer arrive from the Gold Coast. They’ve booked a larger lakeside cabin and yippee, it’s big enough for 5!
Tonight, we’re cooking a roast. We take our air fryer and the roast of pork over to the cabin and after a few false starts, the crackling begins to burn as it’s now glued to the element. Oh great, the roast is a little too large for the air fryer, but we’ll get there with a shove and a squeeze. Now for the veggies, they can go into the gas oven. Reading the instructions on the wall we soon realise that the knob that we must push doesn’t exist. This is one of the newer cabins. We try many combinations of dials, poke the lighter in several different holes at the front of the oven, but still no luck. In desperation we ring the office, and they offer to send someone out. In the meantime, the girls turn 2 knobs and miraculously the gas fires up. Quickly shoving the veggies in, we ring the office to cancel our request, but they’ve closed for the day. The veggies are half cooked when a handyman knocks on the door.
“Where did you come from?” says The Very Good Golfer.
“Scotland.” He replies.
Eventually, dinner is cooked, and the pork is, well, a bit tough. After too many drinks and a lot of laughs, we wander back to the van.
Woody, who is well past his bedtime, tries to tune the TV for the umpteenth time. All we’ve got so far is a pixelated Tour de France. He pops outside to check if the car is locked and can’t find his keys. We start turning everything upside down, while Woody returns to the cabin and I find the keys (for the 2nd time this trip) hanging on the aerial cable!
