Ararat, Vic
Day 8 Friday 26/12/2025, Boxing Day, cold windy – 18
With the weather as it is, there is no point in free camping on our way home. We hitch up and head off. Once more hay bales are in the paddocks. A strong wind buffets us from the south. Because of the expected long delays on the West Gate Bridge, we choose to go ‘the old way’. Picking up Route 8, the old Ballarat Road through Footscray and over the Maribyrnong River, past Flemington Racecourse, through Royal Park, around Melbourne General Cemetery (the last resting place for many of Woody’s ancestors) and through Carlton to enter the northern entrance of Eastlink M3. Although it takes quite a while it is an interesting journey through parts of Melbourne we haven’t seen in a long time.

Ararat was a fascinating town to spend some time in. There was plenty to see and we didn’t even get to the museum or visit the many wineries in the area. Once again, thanks to Glenys Gelzinis over at Caravancorrespondent.com for the tip. Onya, Glenys you certainly came up trumps!

Great to hear! And I’m always keeping notes on your travels too, we are yet to see the Gum San museum or J ward, but I’m probably too chicken to venture there.

It’s well worth seeing both, but gosh we were glad to get out of that prison.

I don’t like jails, but I do admire your photograph.
