Townsville, Qld
Townsville is a beautiful city. A tropical paradise situated at the mouth of the Ross River, with Castle Hill providing a pink backdrop to the city. There’s little better than a morning stroll along The Strand watching the Coral Sea sparkling in the sun. The Magnetic Island ferry runs back and forth across the bay. The shady gardens of tropical greenery, colourful cafes, beaches, pools and playgrounds beckon.

For the caravanner, Townsville offers everything a large city provides with a number of shopping malls in the suburbs. Especially for when the coffee machine coughs out its last espresso and the campers are desperate for a new one.

Drive or walk up Castle Hill for an all-encompassing view of the city and coast. Take the walks around Kissing Point for history of the Coral Sea battles of World War Two and the American forces who were based here. Townsville still has a strong military presence and it’s not unusual to be surprised by large, camouflaged things, driving by or flying above.

I love Townsville and we got to know it very well when our van broke down and we had to wait 3 weeks in a hostel for parts to arrive from Sydney. Plenty to see and do

It is such a beautiful city and from a tourism perspective tends to be overlooked.
