Yarram, Wet & Wild – Day 1 Meeniyan

Yarram, Vic

Day 1 Saturday 22/11/2025, Meeniyan, overcast 15 to pleasant 22

It’s much easier going to Gippsland from the Mornington peninsula as we don’t have to drive through the city.

We stop in Tooradin to pick up a BBQ chook (aka bachelor’s handbag) for tonight’s dinner and then it’s on down the South Gippsland (The South Gippy) Highway and up into the hills to Nyora and Poowong. Gosh what’s happened here? Perched on a ridge with a general store and a cute looking pub there are now housing estates. This region is certainly growing. The recreation reserve has a small, grassed area for camping but not much else. Toothless and Mrs. Doubtfire arrive, and we make the decision to continue to Meeniyan.

A quick glimpse of the Poowong Pub as we pass by.

This is a beautiful drive and so typical of West Gippsland. Rolling emerald green hills dotted with cows, hilltops crowned with attractive homes and large tracts of bushland. On the downside we see 3 dead wombats on the road, each with legs in the air. They are one of the perils of driving at night as they are built like a small Sherman tank, one wombat can cause a lot of damage to a front end.

Heading down towards Leongatha, sorry no road kill!

The reserve at Meeniyan is chockers with young families camped on the grassed area so we scoot around the back of the oval and grab a site on the gravel. Not exactly paradise but we have a good view of the Saturday arvo cricket match.

We all take walks around this busy little town. The bush walk that skirts the oval beckons too, it’s always worth scouting for koalas. I spend some time in the art gallery while Woody does the food outlets.

Dinner is the now chilled chicken with a salad.  Dark clouds have been threatening all day and as forecast rain starts on the dot of 8:00pm

Accom: $10.00, Fuel: $34.87, Towing Kms: 131Kms
