On the Road Again – A Peaceful Place

The highway is bordered by light bushland until halfway to Childers when suddenly there’s a feast of tropical produce, sugar cane, dense mango trees, macadamias, avocados, lychees, lemons and more. Childers, as always, is quaint, colourful and busy. Leopard trees with their delicately striped bark, line the street.

At Apple Tree Creek the road to Bundaberg peels away. We won’t be going that way this time. There is light bushland around us now and the roadside grasses are taller than me (actually much taller than me).

We stop at Gin Gin to buy a swap over gas bottle and get ourselves ‘painted into a corner’ at the service station. The only way out is to drive across the servo backyard, over a ditch and up a dirt track. Oh well.

It’s only another 23 kms to Lake Monduran. We leave the highway and turn down a bitumen road. The park is a peaceful spot and aimed at the fishing community. The powered sites are on grass and aren’t level, but ramps fix that problem. Being on a bit of a slope gives us pleasant views of the surrounding countryside. We’re below the dam wall and it’s only a short walk up the hill to the top of the dam and the lake views.

Behind the counter in the park office, there is a huge stuffed fish that apparently was a world record catch. The amenities here are excellent and have a top-notch laundry with modern coinless equipment. The unpowered sites are on pleasant sloping lawns among the trees.

Already I’ve spotted 3 pretty face wallabies, 2 gray crowned babblers, a butcher bird, a kookaburra and a host of doves.
