Caravanning is Like Sex

Yep, you read that correctly, caravanning is like sex! You just cannot get enough of it.

There’s the build up, counting down the days until you can sneak away. The preparation, packing the van and each time you open the door to put food on board or a few clothes, the smell of the van heightens your senses and sets you to longing, only a few more days, only a few more days.

Then you start baking for it, luscious casseroles and heart warming pastas go into the freezer for those cold inland nights. And the warm sweet smell of biscuits and cakes wafts from your oven as you prepare for lazy morning coffees to come with fingers wrapped around your favourite ‘hey I’m on holidays’ mug.

Then it’s one more sleep at home before we go and whispers in the night….. “guess where we’ll be tomorrow night”.

In a rush of activity we’re off, on the open road and leaving the city as a mere reflection in the mirrors. Our breath starts to slow, our shoulders relax and we sigh. “We’re on the road.”

Comfortable weeks envelop us, the van becomes ‘home’ and a new love enters our lives. Each evening we breathe the fresh air, toast the day, the sunset and the beauty of the surroundings. We wonder like excited children about what tomorrow will bring and sure enough each new place and experience leaves its mark upon us, a feeling a remembrance to be savoured over and over.

Before we know it we have reached the turning point and home starts to become closer. Not that we don’t love home, we do, but this is different, exciting, like an illicit affair.

We back the van into the yard. “Oh the flowers have grown, haven’t they?” We read the mail and turn on the water heater. Trudging, just going through the motions with heavy hearts unpacking the van. It’s over. We snap at each other moodily. I put the photos into a slideshow and we reminisce to ourselves in front of the TV.

Then an email appears “Anyone going to the Muster at whatchamacallit?”

Our hearts quicken and once again it’s “How many days till we go? Gee we better start packing.” Oh, God there’s that urge again.

  1. Oh how I love this post! Great title and great intro, my thoughts exactly! Beautifully written and so describes how I feel about it all … the anticipation, the travel, the home coming. I guess we’re all made of the same mould. Thanks.

  2. I never did caravanning, but it’s one of my biggest dreams. The way you describe it is the way I imagine it. 😀
I did camping for several years, though. In a tent but also in a trailer, but we are now selling it because we want something more. We urge for adventure.

Thank you for writing this (the title is superb!), you may have give me the inspiration to work even more toward that goal.

    Have the best day ever,

    Nícia ❤
