As we are leaving Mudgee we discover the now disused but grand railway station and a local tells us that it is in fact the Yass station building, apparently someone in Sydney mixed up the plans and the smaller town of Mudgee got the much more imposing station building.

Now that was a win for Mudgee, if only they could think of a way to use it now.

I have to wonder if that new station was designed and built by a government entity, seems like the railroad companies are a lot more careful with their dimes.

Ah therein lies the difference. All of our public railways were built by the government and in the old days they often built beautiful stations. Our private railways are usually for the carrying of minerals from mines to ports.
