This week we popped down to Little River to catch up with caravanning mates who are suffering itchy feet whilst waiting for the kiddies to return to school after the summer holidays. In short we’re all busting to get our camp sites back when the hordes go home.
About 50 kms south west of Melbourne and just off the Princes Highway (Geelong Road) you’ll find the sleepy hamlet of Little River. Known to most Melburnians as the place that inspired the name of the rock band… Little River Band.
Hidden in the back of town where the tar starts to get narrow is the Little River Hotel a cheery establishment that is becoming known for good pub grub. A few months ago we called in on a pleasant Sunday arvo and enjoyed a beer in the bar while a live band (not LRB) played on the veranda. This week we had a long lunch on the shady veranda. The menu varies according to what’s available locally and I can vouch for the Garfish & Chips.
The pub has a large grassed area out back and in time they are hoping to provide overnight camping for self contained vans. Being this close to Melbourne but away from the bustle of the city one could imagine that this could become a perfect stopover for RV’s waiting to return to Tasmania on the ferry. If you’re passing by give them a ring and check if camping is available.
