It is said that the old Cornish miners of Broken Hill used to sleep sitting up, because their lungs were too damaged by lead and dust to allow them to sleep horizontally. They had traipsed up from South Australia, with their worldly goods in their wheelbarrows, after the copper ran out at Burra in the early 1880’s. Can you imagine how it must have felt pushing a wheelbarrow 350kms across semi arid land?
I’m planning a road trip to Broken Hill later this year, but I won’t be pushing a wheelbarrow

Yeah, I know, when we finally have the time to do things our bodies tell us to slow down.

It was certainly a tough life for the miners.

Such courage and resilience, I can’t imagine having to live a life like that, how they must have suffered to try to make a living.

Even today the life of an underground miner sounds terrifying and far too many die.
